I didn't check out the bugs, but I have in previous versions run accross and
issue where the installer doesn't much like extended partitions, kinda
freaks out, pretends it can't see anything. Probably a traumatic bit-hood
experience.

Makes sense, and now that I am thinking clearly I realize that certain
applications have been displaying better for myself as well. I wasn't
sure if it was the driver, the removal of compiz, or an update in the
app itself. I just wondered if it was practical.

Intrepid Compiz hangs on
I see a lot of negative attention being thrown in the direction of the
developers. None of us want our problem to be swept under the rug but
before we get too pushy and make subtle and sly comments being
disrespectful to the devs, let us ask ourselves one question:
How much did I pay for

Can this bug be renamed or moved away from being specific to the laptop?
I can verify the problem and workaround on a Dell 2350.
Upon apt-get remove compiz compiz-core I was able to login. Any
information I can provide I shall upon request.

cannot start X session since intrepid beta on
I should clarify, I can get to GDM Login Screen at any time. It is when
logging into gnome session that I have the problem indicated previously
(mouse moves, hear logon sound, black screen).
I was able to install icewm and use it without issue, that is how I
found the workaround. I implemented
I am having the SAME problem with Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 Beta with an

I am SO grateful for the workaround provided here but I agree this
sounds like a verifiable bug. :)
The problem ONLY began when I installed the Restricted Driver which
turned on Compiz and such. I
Is there anything I can be doing to help with this?

I think I figured it out. And I SUSPECT this may be the culprit in all
related bugs:
My partition table went something like this:
hda1 primary Ubuntu_Server
hda2 primary /home
hda3 extended
hda5 logical PCLinuxOS_2007
hda6 logical swap

That said, it's pretty straight forward: the partition manager starts,
it thinks I have a SATA hard drive, which I don't, I have IDE, and then
