this bug has a patch presented in bug # 323901 didn't know which to mark as duplicate so I'll leave that to someone else. And for those wondering, if you look closely at the patch you'll see that where it has - signs you take out the relevant line, where it has + signs you add the relevant line.

I should clarify, I can get to GDM Login Screen at any time. It is when logging into gnome session that I have the problem indicated previously (mouse moves, hear logon sound, black screen). I was able to install icewm and use it without issue, that is how I found the workaround. I implemented
