Thanks for trying to help. However, I gave up and moved to Windows. Following
this experience (over three months and no solution to a major crash) I
understood it is a much more reliable system.

1. I don't know what you mean by latest mainline release. I used Ubuntu's
update manager to get the latest.
2. The release that broke it started from 3.2.39. Release 38 is working fine,
release 39 and on is not working.
3. I don't understand what is bisect the bad commit

The behaviour described in bug 1168173 is not like the behaviour I see. My
system freezes within seconds, not hours, and does not go into terminal
mode.
How do I test the aforementioned kernel?
Note that I'm new to linux, so keep things simple
