Yes, I agree that your drive is possibly failing. If something
important like upstart (init) or even the kernel itself resides on one
or more of those bad blocks anything can happen. Kernel panics due to
hard drive failure is rare, but I've seen it a couple times. I'm not
sure if there is a way

Thank you for sending in this bug report! I also see this behaviour on
Ubuntu 9.04 amd64 architechure. I even tried cat'ing messages, which
worked, but tailing them (-f or not) didn't work. Odd.

please? Also, could you, please, attach your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.
Are you running any commands other than just joining and chatting when
this happens? Any more information you can provide to help me reproduce
it would be
Thank you. Just two more things that might help. Could you post the
output to from running xdpyinfo in a gnome-terminal, please? Also, a
screen shot of your font settings (System - Preferences - Appearance
- Fonts), please. Thank you very much!

Thank you! Sorry, I have one more thing for you to try. I noticed you
are using a third-party font. Could you, please, try changing your
fonts to the default Sans for Application, Document and Desktop font and
Sans Bold for Window title font. Leave the size the same, just change
the font.
Using a freshly installed Ubuntu 9.04 on i386 architecture with the
latest meld I see the same bug.
