I get a similar error upgrading to hardy and it leaves the update-
manager package in a broken state. When running apt-get install -f I get
this error:

This is a regression in hardy. Nearly all graphical java programs will
fail due to this. Early releases of gutsy had this problem but it was
fixed before the release such that a default installation of gutsy did
not experience the problem for java programs. Yes, technically it's a

vmalloc failure.

I seem to be having the same problem with the gutsy beta cd, except the
safe graphics mode doesn't work either. I was able to get the lspci and
Xorg logs via one of the virtual ttys. The feisty cd does not have this
same problem.
