I had this problem when I booted my laptop into single display
(basicially just the laptop screen) mode after having configured it
earlier in multiple display (extended desktop) mode.
Worked fine when it was configured in single display and later connected
an external monitor (in that situation
One more thing, this happens when gnome-console is full screen. When the
gnome-console is windowed, gvim appears fine. My system is kept upto
date and I check for the bug again before posting, so yes the bug is

My observation is that if Firefox with Flash running is suspended and then

Super+M used to toggle the laptop between normal and negative mode

OK I also found that the steps mentioned in my previous post were
temporary, meaning the changes I made did not persist after a couple
of reboots and resumes from suspend.

The udev rules outlined in Martin's post worked after I rebooted.

You are right, if the stop udev command is put into /etc/rc.local my usb
keyboard and mouse are not recognized at startup. However if I do not
have the stop udev command in /etc/rc.local and only run the stop
command after booting up and logging in with the usb keyboard and mouse

I tried doing what you asked but it did not go away. Besides that
command stays in the foreground and does not return control back to me
unless I terminate it with Ctrl+C. Even if I put it into the background
top still shows udisks-daemon as being the no 1 process always.
I found a temp fix for me. I had top showing the load in excess of 1.00
but after shutting down udevd the load has come down to 0.04. The way I
stopped it was:
service udev stop.

I decided to try Lucid Alpha after seeing your email and the issue seems to be
resolved.
Although I would prefer a better console font, the default is too big for me. :)

Killing udisks seemed to help. I notice that this problem is tied to udevd for
the Optiarc DVD RW AD-7560S drive.
