epdfview also crashes on startup on every PDF file, on natty. Or
should that be filed as a separate bug? I'm guessing it's the
same problem, and there doesn't seem to be an epdfview-specific
bug filed.
epdfview also uses poppler, and all evidence points poppler as the root

that's not surprising. the upstream version (i.e. non-popplerized

it turns out that i was wrong about the cause of the problem. it wasn't
the api change, it was some other problem in a dependency, but that was
handled in maverick by reverting to an older debian version. from what
i can tell, the new package works fine on natty.

actually a sync with debian's package won't fix anything. i've already
tested debian's 3.02-11 sources on ubuntu, and the problem still exists.
this is an issue in the package dependencies somewhere; probably
fontconfig.
the solution is to revert to 3.02-2 from lucid that is known to work.

after sleeping on this, my best guess is that the issue is in
fontconfig, or perhaps ubuntu's new fonts since those are rather
untested (except in maverick). one could possibly try not using those.

my thinking was that system is a little more general than computer.
system could be applied to flash drives, tablets, etc; whereas computer
seems a little more restrictive. however, computer could be a fine term
as well if there is a consensus around that.

you'll need to install debian's poppler as well (ubuntu's poppler is the
cause of the segfault), and perhaps some of the other dependencies. or
you could test it on a debian unstable system directly. the problem
will likely not be seen with the upstream sources directly.

ok, i think i understand what you're saying now. however, i can't
reproduce it with 3.02-10 on debian. it may have been a temporary issue
with 3.02-2. can you try a newer package? note 3.02-9 in maverick is
in bad shape, so you won't get anywhere with that.
