Hi Sebastien. Thanks for your help.
Bionic was the first Ubuntu LTS version not to include gnome-subtitles. While
I'm not sure exactly why this happened, but I assume it was likely because it
hadn't been updated to GTK 3 at the time Bionic was released. My rational for
it to be included in

François, I suggest that you install version 1.3 which comes with support for
GStreamer 1.0.
Gnome Subtitles 1.3 will only be available in the official repositories in
Ubuntu 16.04, but you can install it for your Ubuntu version from the Webupd8
PPA:
How is this issue still with undecided importance? It is a major issue
not having sound working in Ubuntu.

The gnome-subtitles package in Ubuntu is missing a dependency on
libmono-i18n4.0-all. The original debian package has already been
updated but it hasn't been synchronized yet to Ubuntu. Until that
happens, the easy fix will be to manually install libmono-i18n4.0-all.
That should fix your problem.

mono version from SVN? I'm currently using Ubuntu 11.10 and all works
fine (libmono2.0-cil 2.10.5-1 here).

Gnome Subtitles crashes in multiple situations, including creating new
files and opening existing ones. This is due to a missing dependency in
the Ubuntu package, which makes Gnome Subtitles unable to deal with
different character codings - necessary as it works with text files.
