The problem does not affect the use of alsamixer to change volume, so I
don't think the problem is directly with alsa, but rather, how
pulseaudio is interacting with alsa with this driver.

I think this bug should be moved to the Thunderbird package (not that
you can get upstream to fix anything they broke from 2.x to 3.x). There
are several themes and colors this new feature will mis-behave with.
A work around is to create a chome/userChrome.css file in your
Thunderbird profile

Thanks for taking the time to look into this... Wherever the 'feature'
originates, I have to reiterate that of the 3 gui volume control apps I
have installed by default, Sound Properties, Gnome-volume-control
applet and Sound Indicator, Sound indicator is the only one that doesn't
follow along.
Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: gnome-control-center
When user changes theme in the Gnome-appearance application, the
.gnome2/backgrounds.xml file gets overwritten with an empty blank file,
preventing the user from quickly switching to pre-defined favorite
desktop backgrounds.

As a work around to this problem, invoke growisofs with the notray
option.
Example:
growisofs -use-the-force-luke=notray -Z /dev/dvd=myiso.iso
Someone might want to patch growisofs so this is default, as the old re-
load media behavior does not seem to be needed with current kernels or

Embarrassingly, that sample does not actually trigger the bug I was

combination exactly can reproduce it. Unfortunately, the only files I

I can confirm that XV output in karmic and flgrx still tears. I can use
gl output, but that corrupts the video in interesting ways when using
Compiz (seems to work well without compiz). However, if not using
Compiz, I get perfect XV video output with the open source drivers.

This behaviour also has a non-security annoyance.. on systems that use
ACL, when a file is copied to a location where it should (and does) get
default permissions, Nautilus then removes the needed MASK bits,
rendering those default ineffective.

SCott, you do not understand the problem.
The workaround you describe is already in place by default, the audio
