kernel 2.6.24-12 and beyond (up to currently 2.6.24-18) do not have the
correct config-2.6.24-XX-generic in /boot. The one thing I noticed was
different was:
/boot/config-2.6.24-12-generic:# CONFIG_SND is not set

Confirming as well. Seems to be a conflict between libxklavier12 and
libxklavier11. The gnome kbd packages are using the new version 12, and
and a number of other packages are using version 11. I tried purging
them out, but they had too many dependencies, so I'll just leave my
system in a broken
Well, I upgraded all the machines to feisty back 2 months ago, and all
was fixed, however; today one of 50 machines started struggling (same
issue, hanging on update-menus). I have 3 identical machines with
identical hardware and software that aren't having the problem.

I never posted this, but now that someone else has come across the
issue, my temporary work-around was to mv /usr/bin/update-menus /usr/bin
/update-menus.old
And then create /usr/bin/update-menus with the following:
#!/bin/bash
/bin/true
The only downside is fluxbox menus aren't up to date

firefox or gimp)
It hangs:
