I made the change suggested in comment #4 and it works like a dream. I
would like to thank Stefan for helping me work around this annoying bug.

I had exactly this problem. A killall wpa_supplicant seems to fix it.
Please implement a proper fix as this is probably driving some users
nuts.
It took me ages to find this page.
