I was eventually able to install kubuntu via the following:
1) format ssd with MS-DOS partitions (not GPT)
2) boot from usb in legacy mode
3) manually set up partitions - one ext4 and one swap (no efi partition)
Essentially these steps are an attempt to force legacy install and avoid
the efi

On a fresh jaunty kubuntu install:
sudo apt-get install samba
I get the problems reported above (in dolphin, right clicking a
directory, selecting permissions, selecting sharing, entering password,
nothing happens).
If I then
sudo apt-get install kdenetwork-filesharing
things work as
I have the same problem:
* k3b fails to rip on calling lame
* using audiocd:// in konqueror and copying results in file containing garbage
This is on a 32 bit install of Kubuntu.
This is very basic functionality that users expect should work without
issue. For this reason, I would like to see
