In my Dell XPS420 with Unity and ATI video, i have the same situation
that Colin describes:
- If i do a shutdown or reboot from the menu, the computers hung on
- If i do a shutdown from the terminal, it works property
- If i do a reboot from the terminal, it do not work

Thank you very much: The problem was solved by removing the files
/etc/shadow.lock and /etc/passwd.lock
The problem appeared upgrading from version 9.10 to the 10.04
