I've succeeded in changing the picture by disabling XMPP, changing it. It crashes then I restarted and the picture was changed. I've then re-enabled WLM. Note that I'm using 'MyStatusBox' as plugin which enable me to choose different status for each protocol but different picture as well. --

The re-install loop is a more general problem, either in apt or in launchpad (see Bug 152317) For the failed re-install, I can't reproduce it. Can you purge the package, install it, then issue /etc/init.d/vmware stop ? If Virtual ethernet keeps failing, can you issue rmmod vmnet manually ? --
