I have the same issue. As mentioned in reddit thread in OP, the login
screen displays properly at 1366x768. I'm running MATE so I'm not sure
how to implement the workaround @johnnyl33-k mentions for Xubuntu since

Brief update: I left synaptic running over night and it did eventually
finish the install and as far as I can tell everything is working
correctly now. It does, however, still seem like a minor bug that it
takes so long to unpack.

dpkg hangs when installing backport

I'm running 10.04 on a x86 machine and am trying to install
libstdc++5_3.3.6-20~lucid1_i386.deb from the backport repositories.
I've tried using both dpkg and synaptic and either way the install hangs
after getting the message

Running lucid on a Thinkpad T60 and encountering this problem after
upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04. Haven't tweaked any config files. Fn+7
solves the problem.
