I did not have that ppa enabled (and haven't since a prior version of Ubuntu) but I went ahead and re-added it wiat apt-add-repository and then used ppa-purge to remove it again. Then i tried to process the upgrade again and it still failed with the same error. I'm sorry, I am pretty handy with

Never mind. Looked at the apt.log, which was filled with garbage, and realized it was some old packages that were the same version as the Ubuntu ones only with git[some other stuff] as the version. Tracked them all down in Synaptic and forced the official versions (a downgrade). Ran

This issue was fixed. It had something to do with the fact that I have a RAID 1 array with a MBR on it (because I treat the raw array as a raw drive for a VirtualBox VM I'm running on the machine). In the next version of Ubuntu immediately following this one, HAL was able to deal with this

I changed the affected package to zope2.10 since it is likely to gain more exposure (maybe?) and it is more relevant since it is the default zope in karmic. This seems like a no brainer. The maintainer for zope needs to update the version of zope-common in the repos or change the dependency.

Yeah, that'show I logged in when I got this error from a root shell with networking. But when I boot normally, there is no network, so SSH doesn't work. I can't even ping the machine. The desktop appears normally, but with the Failed to load HAL (I think, not sure of the phrasing) error message.
