In my tty's, having a TERM=linux is the default and doesn't cause problems with vim. Perhaps you have another bug? xfce4-terminal is what sets the TERM, but it shouldn't be linux, since then programs wouldn't know they can set the title. -- Embedded Terminal Emulator isn't giving a TERM

@Bryce Had the same problem on a new (although updated) install of xubuntu gusty, added the following to my xorg.conf: Section Extensions Option Composite Disable EndSection Section ServerFlags Option AIGLX off EndSection And that fixed the problem (didn't even notice
