I just converted a set of VM's from a Windows VMware install to KVM and
ran into the same error. Some machines work and some do not (same error

I've an older IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad and was having a hard time until I
found these instructions.
Last step was of course just adding the startup script.

I completely wiped my hd and loaded the latest Ubuntu. I tried the driver
again with ndiswrapper and had no freezes or errors. It seems the problem is
fixed. The driver didn't work for my builtin WiFi but thats not your
problem. It did not freeze the system. Good work you guys!
