Thanks for replying. There is a file named alsa already in the /etc directory so I can't use that name. Here is the error: mkdir: `/etc/alsa/dev.d/': Not a directory I tried in nautilus (as root) but was also denied. I've posted another bug report specifically on alsa-base. Hopefully that will

With repeated attempts I was able to get Feisty installed. There are two ALSA updates in Update Manager. When trying to install them I get the following error: E: /var/cache/apt/archives/alsa-base_1.0.13-3ubuntu1_all.deb: subprocess pre-installation script returned error exit status 1 E:

What can I do to get this upgrade to work. Edgy is somewhat flaky, now. There are 352 updates listed in update-manager and the upgrade button for Feisty is gone. I don't know if I should DL these updates. Edgy was up to date before attempting the upgrade. What about just updating the ALSA files?
