I've not gotten this error anymore. I am now running Hardy and Pidgin
version 1:2.4.0-1ubuntu2

I have the exact same problem using pidgin with glipper enabled with these
versions:
ii glipper 0.95.1-3A clipboard manager for GNOME and other
window
ii pidgin 1:2.1.0-1ubuntu multi-protocol instant messaging client
This is on a gutsy desktop up to date as of Aug 12,
same thing just happened to me, copy/pasted a block of text and bam
crash.

I got picked up on a dupe I submitted. No KDE/Klipper here, though I do
have Glipper installed. (I'm not sure if it's the clipboard stuff or the
system tray icon that you are talking about.)

Looks similar to a bug I was about to submit. Pidgin crashed when I
tried to paste. (running Gnome though I do have KDE installed too)
