I believe this was always the behaviour. I agree that it's undesirable,
though.

Looks like from the Pidgin website change log that they have added a
button to un-disable the account from within pidgin. Either way this
doesn't appear to be Pidgin issue per se and definitely not an Ubuntu
one. It seems to me it would be an issue with MSN.
