It's not because of Compiz, it's caused by XGL. For some reason, the
code must do something wrong, because it uses the VTE component just
like the Gnome terminal which has no problem with XGL.

I can confirm this issue on latest Gutsy, even without Compiz.
Tilda appears all right for the first time, but later only a gray window is
shown all the time (similarly as on the screenshot by Kurt).
