Just tested with gdm3 3.36.3-0ubuntu0.20.04.4 (Focal) and this is still

Sounds like it should work. The docs say:
"When managing a display, gdm3 attempts to execute
/etc/gdm3/Init/display, or /etc/gdm3/Init/Default if that does not
exist."
