After some prompting it was suggested I attach a debdiff of the above patches applied on 1.8.24-1ubuntu4. I've tested locally on my machine and it appears to work, as well as fix the bug I experienced. I'd much prefer to backport the existing 1.22 package but there were too many updated package

I've created a virutal machine which expresses the bug in Xubuntu 20.04.02 from a fresh install. You'll need to log in as the user "user" with the password "password". In order to experience the bug you'll need to change and save the VPN once, then you should be able to follow the instructions
