Weird. That's been the default input handler for years so I don't know
why your system didn't have it installed.
Still, not a bug in the package itself if the package was missing.
** Bug watch added:
gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-input-libinput/-/issues #51
adding the package xserver-xorg-input-libinput appears to have solved
the problem. According to the folks at freedesktop, it should have
defaulted to use the libinput driver, even without the 40-libinput.conf
file, but in my case it didn't
** Changed in: xserver-xorg-input-libinput (Ubuntu)
I think you should report the bug to the developers at:

Unicomp
I was hoping that updates to the full release would fix this, but it
hasn't. Any suggestions on what I should try to track this down?

Title:
It seems like just an input problem because your log mentions that Xorg
doesn't recognise the input devices:
[92.721] (II) config/udev: Adding input device ELECOM TrackBall Mouse HUGE
TrackBall (/dev/input/event8)
[92.721] (II) No input driver specified, ignoring this device.

note that for this bug I am not sure that it's only an input problem for
this bug. The system is unresponsive (inc numlock) so I can't tell if
it's only the input or if the entire system is locked.

Let's keep this bug about the trackball/keyboard problem.
Please open a new bug about the flashes in Wayland sessions. That looks
like a kernel problem in the amdgpu driver so please run:
