Public bug reported:

I have two soundcards, an Ensoniq 5880 rev02 pci card, and an internal
Via 8237 AC97. I cannot get sound out of either. I am currently
plugged into the Via and was just getting sound fine only 2 or 3 days
ago, but gradually my volume has decreased. It seems to be occuring by
watching flash videos through firefox, as I cannot recall using any
other audio software. I have checked in alsamixer and the
System->Preferences->Sound that my card is being used, and actually
tests successfuly if I click "test sound" in the gnome-sound-properties.
It doesn't however, produce sound under any other circumstances
(firefox, games, bootup, etc.).

Any consideration is greatly appreciated, I'm sure you guys have your
hands full, and I realize your time is very important!
