How can this be of low importance, anyone with 2-2.5G of ram that runs
a 64bit version gets at best the vesa driver in most cases.

problem doesn't just occur with the binary nvidia driver, but also with

Apparently the problem needs kernel changes where the system remaps
memory to, the following link explains it and links to the fix:
