I should have mentioned this earlier, but the problem has been fixed for
me in Ubuntu 8.10. So you could probably mark it 'resolved'.

I have ASUS A7N8X motherboard with same audio controller. And I also hear this
background noise. Noise became noticeable in Feisty, as far as I remember.
lspci -vs 00:06.0 tells:

This may be related, or not, but I have a Thinkpad G41, and after
installing Ubuntu Hardy, I found a similar problem. Upon resuming from
suspend-to-RAM, a rather loud nasty sound comes from the speakers for
maybe 0.2 sec or so. This was definitely not a problem before
