I am having this problem today 30 April 2009.
I started the upgrade from 8.04 last night. The network or Ubuntu
servers ran very slowly so the download of packages went slowly. On
checking my laptop this morning some packages had failed to download. I
then took the option at this point to cancel

I have taken my PC's life in it's hands and rebooted while the
distribution upgrade was in it's dependency hell and cleaning up.
On reboot, I came up in low graphics ( I had lost my graphics setup).
I restarted update-manager -d and proceeded with the upgrade.
This time the system has

Same here, while upgrading from 8.04 to 8.10. Harddrive working like crazy for
hours but nothing happenes after ldconfig deferred processing now taking
place.
Intrepid and kjournald processing running all the time. Eventually Intrepid
eats all my memory.

And, I might add, after rebooting I'm still in 8.04, the update applet
constantly asks me to restart my system and when launching the update
manager it goes over the whole procedure once again. Hence I have no
idea how to upgrade my system but to wait for a bug fix.

I've the same behavior here. Updating an 8.04 to 8.10. Update process
has been running for a while. The terminal says ldconfig deferred
processing now taking place. I'm running compiz, from time to time the
update window get greyed for a few seconds. The harddrive is working
