I got the same problem in some ubuntu hardy vserver.
It's a problem related to klogd. It says there for 5 minutes and after
fails. I've added 'set -x' to klogd init script and it showed me this.

pls keep in mind that the menu.lst has been modified so that i can start in the
regular mode ,
the splash option is removed from the end of the first kernel line which i
use...
since splash was

the problem lies in the usplash this is the workaround for the problem

I didn't want to completely remove the gui splash screen so I followed

among things NOT working due to the upgrade is the network can not
use my system what so ever.. Yes I can use the recovery prompt... but I
do not see how I can transfer these files in a easy way... (no I do not

I'm having the same problem. I can't get the log files in the 2.6.27
kernel b/c the entire filesystem is readonly. Here are the logs from
booting with the 2.6.24 kernel.

Just wanted to add that I was able to boot the 2.6.27 kernel completely
by choosing recovery, then resume normal boot.

Same problem here using Kubuntu in an Asus P5GC- MX/ 133 with 2 GB of RAM.
chmod and chown do not help.
