I had this problem on Ubuntu-8.04 32bit.
After Upgrade it is still there in 8.10 32bit.
The same holds for 9.04 64bit with a fresh install.
After having remotely logged in by a ssh-connection with X11-forwarding, either
as user or as root:

My situation is similar if not identical to comment #6. I have seen it
work before, but perhaps that was when I was working directly on that
machine (not remotely).

I see this problem on fresh installs of two different machines, both on
8.04 Hardy and 9.04 Jaunty. Upon remote login through XDMCP and NX the
administrator cannot unlock System-Administration-Users and Groups.
PS: This bug is very serious for us since it stops the possibility to use

What solved the issue for me has been:
1. Purge policykit (please note that this will remove ubuntu-desktop as well)
from Synaptics
2. As Ubuntu-desktop has been removed I had to manually reconnect to the LAN
(the network manager applet has been removed as well)
3. Reinstall ubuntu-desktop

I installed Ubuntu 8.10 32bit the day before yesterday and it seems to
work here, so may be the problem is related to the 64bit, but of course
I can't really tell.

Same problem here, try to run 'sudo pam-auth-update' and let to be
enabled only Unix authentication, it works for me.

Thanks for your help, but unfortunately it did not help. The behaviour
is still the same. However, I hope it became evident that there are more
people having this problem (out of a very small sample who are ready to
