I've created an Intrepid installation for testing, and discovered that in Intrepid, using the RADEON driver, the quality is much better, though not perfect. I've attached the Xorg.0.log from intrepid, which is quite similar, and also says that Acceleration initialization failed ** Attachment

I've gone through that wiki page and ensured the fglrx is completely removed (I'm pretty sure it was anyway, I had already done something very similar). The only instances of 'fglrx' from 'locate' are files that are provided by other packages -- the following packages, to be complete:
