@Rob Speer:
#3: I guess it has nothing to do with auto-logging. It has to do with
caching. When you log in the second time it is smoother because the
majority of the files needed are already loaded.
#4: It might have been slowed down by bootchart, but if Apple and
Microsoft can do it with Snow
I don't know what this bug is even about. You're talking about
different things happening, and there's no way to track progress when
you file bugs that way. There is a new release coming out tomorrow. If
you still have issues, please file them all separately.
** Changed in: xsplash (Ubuntu)
The original bug was about fading during gdm session, which I've
addressed in other bug reports. xsplash supports it, but Ubuntu ships
with metacity in the gdm session and compositing is disabled. If you
want xsplash to fade during gdm session then you need to use gconftool
to set metacity
Okay, I think part of this was because I was unaware I was running
bootchart and bootchart-java. So at the end of the startup process, Java
was eating all my CPU and disk I/O.
Without those, I get different choppy transitions: either the GNOME
panel appears on top of the xsplash graphic until it
I have a similar issue, except that I wouldn't describe the transition
as abrupt because that would imply it happened quickly.
Here's what I get: xsplash disappears, and I'm left with a black screen
with two white bars where the GNOME panels will be. 15-20 seconds pass
before the desktop
Something I've observed is that this only occurs when the computer is
booting and auto-logging-in to my account. If I log out and log in again
from gdm, I get a beautiful crossfade to my desktop, reasonably quickly.

** Description changed:
I'm running fully updated karmic. If you run xsplash from terminal, it
smoothly crossfades into the desktop. (See video attached). But when
xsplash ends during boot, it is abrupt change into the desktop, not a
- smooth fade. It should act the same as if it was run
