Nvidia 9500gt card will NOT function properly with generic Ubuntu
drivers.
Having been spoiled because Ubuntu has done such a great job with
hardware interaction, I failed to notice that this problem was
associated with use of generic drivers.
Executed a clean reinstall of 9.10
Upgraded to

After a reboot, the screensaver did activate.
However, the LCD display did not appear to fully turn off when it should have.
I expected it to enter the no-signal low power state where the power light
would turn amber.
It never reached this state although it did go blank.
In addition, 9.10 was
