This bug affects me as well. Good to hear that it will be fixed soon.
Though it seems as of right now it is available in Lucid repositories.
I feel that while an archive freeze may be in effect, a notice should be
made available to users. This could be easily done on the Beta 1 Known
Issues

- Fixed a bug that caused the X server to crash when rendering
occurred while the X server was not on the active VT.

The drivers aren't on the CD and the package has already been uploaded,
so there will only be a very small time frame where someone installing
will get the 195.16.08 drivers.

Status:
The recalled driver is still present in the Ubuntu repositories, with no
earlier or later driver available. (the nvidia-glx-185 package is now a
metapackage for nvidia-current, which is Nvidia's 195.18 driver). Don't
you think this should be fixed?

No the driver available in Lucid repositories is still the 195.36.08. As soon
as the packages will be updated to 195.36.15 available here:

I think Ubuntu can't release a LTS with a
@Philippe Coval: Under Lucid, nouveau is a reliable alternative. The
positive point is that it supports KMS (and not only UMS like
proprietary driver) but the negative one is that it doesn't support 3D
acceleration.
