The chord got unplugged while I wasn't looking. Before I could fix it
the computer went into hibernation. When I tried to turn it on, it
failed, and strangely-colored vertical stripes appeared on an otherwise
blank screen.

I'm just getting around to dealing with this now.
I have updated to 10.04, and the problem has not gone away. In fact,
it's gotten worse.
In addition to seeing the black screen w/colored lines phenomenon when
waking the machine up from hibernate or suspend, the same problem
occurs

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it
recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the
latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from
