black screen on switch user

This issue appeared while upgrading from Jaunty to Lucid.
Until this upgrade, I had installed the nvidia drivers (173) with nVidia
GeForce FX 5700VE and everything worked fine.
After the upgrade, the trouble happened:
- user A opens a session
- user B opens another session from swithc-applet

I have the same issue as described above - Although I have noticed
this
Before It goes Completely black, sometimes, it will not FADE-IN all the
way (it will look very grey) Then, If I try and swith again, it does not
Fade-in at all (black screen)
anyone have a fix for this?

The same with my system that is upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04
When logged two users and one of them (no matter who was first logged) log out
I get blank screen witout ability to switch any where.
Ctrl+Alt+F1...F10 do not work.
The only way is to make hard reboot.
Video: GF5200 drivers 173. etc
My last suggestion, choosing a screensaver instead of blank screen with
all users, helps but does not solve the problem.

for me this solves the problem:
1 Crtl-Alt-F1, or ssh to the machine
2 login
3 sudo -s
4 who = gives you displays for logged in users
5 xgamma -display display from step 4 -gamma 1.0

I have the same problem after upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04. hard reboot
not necessary, killing all user processes (killall -4 -u user, I use
-4, because otherwise some processes won't die)

The same happens with my newly upgraded to 10.04 from 9.10. When both
users (I have two installed) are logged in and I switch to the other
user I get a black screen, must hard reboot.
