John Curwood, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an
issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD
images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .
If it remains an issue,
Here it comes:
ls -l /dev/disk/by-id /sys/block
/dev/disk/by-id:
insgesamt 0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 2010-09-14 09:08 ata-SAMSUNG_HD502HI_S1VZJ9DSA00758
- ../../sda
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 2010-09-14 09:08
ata-SAMSUNG_HD502HI_S1VZJ9DSA00758-part1 - ../../sda1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10
Ah, thanks. So this is a kernel bug in the end, it doesn't create a
block device for /dev/sdf1 (the actual data partition). Reassigning.

That's strange. When the iPod is plugged in, can you please give me the
output of
ls -l /dev/disk/by-id /sys/block
Thanks!

Ok, I let it plugged in for 3 minutes, here's the output:
udevadm monitor --udev -e
monitor will print the received events for:
UDEV - the event which udev sends out after rule processing
UDEV [1283105226.583748] add /devices/pci:00/:00:10.4/usb1/1-8
(usb)
UDEV_LOG=3
ACTION=add
Thanks. So this did detect sdf1. Can you now please try the same with
udevadm monitor --udev -e
? In your original log sdf1 was missing, but that was autogenerated and
subject to some timeouts, so let's verify this. Thanks!

Thanks for the Apport data. The udev monitor shows that there is no
event for the actual partition (/dev/sdf1), just one for the drive
(/dev/sdf). I'm going to make bug 621605 a duplicate, to keep this one
(which has more decription) the main one.
Can you please remove the ipod, then do
udevadm
Well, here's the output:
m...@mypc:~$ udevadm monitor --kernel --property
monitor will print the received events for:
KERNEL - the kernel uevent
KERNEL[1282849907.647080] add /devices/pci:00/:00:10.4/usb1/1-8
(usb)
UDEV_LOG=3
ACTION=add
I added the information of ubuntu-bug in bug report #621605.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it without more information.
In Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic) we have a new tool to debug storage related
problems. Please run ubuntu-bug, select storage problem, and walk
through the steps. This
Also affects amd64 architecture.
There's an ugly workaround for me. Due to some M$-Software, I have to
use Virtual Box. I can mount the iPod 1st gen. within the boxed
M$-Windows.

Here's something to try: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320
This worked for me. I followed the reset instructions with my iPod
plugged in. The screen dimmed, displayed a do not disconnect message,
and within thirty seconds the system recognized and mounted the device,
asking me what application
Thanks for the idea Gaea, however the instructions for the ipod shuffle
didn't have any effect. Does anyone know if there is a way to revert to
an earlier version of udev so I can alter the playlist on my ipod? It
mounted fine under Karmic Koala and earlier and only stopped when I
upgraded the
Same with iPod Nano 3rd gen xA978
