The problem, unfortunately, is not yet solved. I've tested it and it
remains.

looks like this bug report didn't get attention during the maverick development
period. But I see there's not been more comments on the bug since the release,
which makes me wonder if this is still an
The new package solves the problem, just run the following commands.
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install fglrx
go to system, administration, proprietary drivers and enable the driver
reboot
every thing ok
(driver version 2:8.780-0ubuntu1, kernel 2.6.35-22)

Driver radeon in my xorg.conf where it used to say fglrx.. performance
seems surprisingly good with compiz, etc.
Its a good workaround for now

Do you know if will be there a new version of this driver in the final
version of Ubuntu Maverick?

This also affects me. It has rendered my system unusable after
upgrading to meerkat beta from lucid. There seem to be lots of similar
reports in launchpad. I've marked some of them as duplicates to try and
connect them together.

fglrx fails build on 2.6.35-10-generic
This happens every time Ubuntu updates their kernel and/or Xorg version
and leaves the old fglrx driver in place that was never designed to work
with those new X.org and kernel versions.
Maybe one way to save users this kind of trouble in the future would be
to add versioned dependencies to fglrx
