[ 919.687082] hda_intel: azx_get_response timeout, switching to
single_cmd mode: last cmd=0x001f000a
Lost contact with the codec. :-(
Can you try the latest drivers according to
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules and see
if that solves your problem or not?

here's the version it's reporting now:
cat /proc/asound/version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.23.
Compiled on Aug 26 2010 for kernel 2.6.32-24-generic (SMP).
seems like it updated to the latest. i can't find alsaconf command
though...don't know if that's necessary.
it
just found this:
bash alsa-info.sh --stdout | grep version
Driver version: 1.0.23
Library version:1.0.22
Utilities version: 1.0.22
so i need to figure out how to update the library and utilities to see if
that does any good.

This is strange; I'm trying to run your codec in an emulator, but there
it never sends command 0x001f000a. Sending that is not that wise (NID 1
is not a PCM node), but shouldn't cause the codec to stop working
anyway...
