Yes, the problem remains, though if I can switch cleanly into a virtual
terminal (Alt+F1)

changed the package name to linux. To comply with the Kernel Bug

1. If the usplash screen is shut off in your case, and you still got a white
screen then this is apparently not a bug of usplash.
2. If the usplash screen does not disappear when shutting it off in menu.lst,

Can I put that on hold as an option for for a few days as I'm trying a
simpler solution: removing usplash from /etc/init.d
The *very* preliminary results (two shutdowns) are encouraging---no
white screen freeze---but I need to give it a bit longer to see whether
that's just luck!

For me the solution at the time was removing the splash screen at boot
and shutdown via /boot/grub/menu.lst
Just remove the splash option behind:

report), however after testing it for you I again disabled the splash

now with with Gutsy, on a Dell Latitude C600.

I think this bug is fixed. I booted and did shut down ten times with the
splash screen and everything worked fine.
(problem is that the bug did not show up at every shutdown in my case)
Further: I have no clue if I am using this new PSB driver from Intel (I
assume Ubuntu 7.10 fixed this for me).
According to the positives comments about the fact that this bug is not
reproducible in Gutsy, I set the status of the bug to Fix Released,
however, if someone can still reproduce this issue with Gutsy or Hardy,
please set back the status of the bug to confirmed or just ask for it
