Dell Studio Hybrid 140g produced sound via HDMI in earlier versions of
Ubuntu. However, since doing a fresh install of 11.04, rather than an
upgrade I can't get sound over HDMI to work at all. Video is fine.
Yeah, I suspect the problem is on the video driver side (and
unfortunately I know nothing about the video driver), but it's hard to
know for sure.

One way to check it would be
1) Install latest known working distro (10.10)
2) Ensure it's working
3) Upgrade alsa driver through
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules
4) Reboot
If HDMI stops working now, the problem is on the audio driver side and an

Could the problem be with the Intel GM965 graphic driver (i915 ?) and
not with alsa at all ?

@Charles, looking more closely at your hardware, you have an HDMI port
that's integrated on the analog codec as a digital port, which means
it's not using any of the -hdmi modules at all.
Is the following terminal command giving sound on HDMI:
speaker-test -D hdmi:Intel -c 2 -t sine
If it does

@Renaud, this is by design. Latest kernel versions don't have atihdmi,
nvhdmi and intelhdmi. They instead only have one snd-hda-codec-hdmi
module that covers all of them.

Hello,
Same problem here, but I think I have found the culprit :
module snd-hda-codec-intelhdmi.ko is missing in /lib/modules/2.6.38-11
-generic-pae/kernel/sound/pci/hda/
(as well as snd-hda-codec-nvhdmi.ko and snd-hda-codec-atihdmi.ko by the
way...).

It is not easy
It is not easy to know if this is a audio driver or video driver
problem, but ways to figure it out include trying:
1) 10.10
2) 10.10 with upgraded alsa drivers according to

After trying the fix listed here and also installing codecs and an alsa
