Confirmed (for me) in Jaunty.
Changing to double buffering worked.
Not sure if it matters at all, but:
Video Chipset: NVidia Quadro NVS 140M
Video Driver: nvidia (proprietary) v180.44

doublebuffer option solves this problem here as well.

This letter disappearing thing happens, and setting the double buffering

I think that this happens only on certain hardware though. My laptop
with the intel 851 chipset never had this issue, while my geforece8500GT
with the nvidia beta drivers as well as with the vesa drivers
Same on 0.09.4-0ubuntu2, x86, Feisty.

OK, I figured out what seems to be a fix. You have to enable Double
Buffering in Tilda's options (it's in the first tab).
