I am experiencing this bug too.
Note that I found a handy workaroud here:

Simply add a luancher to your panel that executes xfce4-panel -r so
you can reset the panel when autohide breaks.

On Thunar 1.5.2 it seems that panel doesn't autohide if you have the
'Places' launcher on the panel. After removing 'Places' i didn't
encounter any lockdown.
