I had the same problem, did the same as Gregor, nothing worked, I then used
aqbanking from lucid (version 4.1.8) and now everything works fine again.
It seems to be a problem of the aqbanking version in karmic (4.1.2),
that apparently has been solved with version 4.1.6, see
the comment for this
Can confirm that setting the NFS clients to dhcp does solve this issue
for me as well.

I have seen a similar hang before, it seems to be some sort of race
condition in the libapt downloader. I have not found a way to reproudce
it nor did I manage to get a gdb trace of it. If someone can find a way
to reproduce the issue, I would be very thanksful.
