Tracing through init_xrecord shows:

Heh, after installing cleanly it still doesn't run:
1.)
The README.Debian states the startup script is located in
/usr/sbin/openerp-server
while it's in
/usr/bin/openerp-server
2.) Seems like python-xml is really needed:

This code works on python2.5 without problems, so it is python2.6 related.
Furthermore, python2.5 contains the same gtk/pygtk version as python2.6 so that
should not be to blame.
It appears also that sometimes the crash does not appear, so it is not 100%
reproducable.
Another note, when I try and play mp3's after recreating the error i get an
error it says, cant play 44100 htz switching to 48000 I think this might be
important. Sorry I missed it last time.

I have a simpler workaround, that does not involve root privileges and
messing with /usr/lib links.

With 2.6.28-8, my T60 (model 2007-gen) wired connection doesn't work
too. But it is different from this thread. It doesn't detect the eth0

I just had to restart my PC 2 times, before I could start this session.
I remembered, that I had the same problem on my notebook. It is an ASUS
A6Q00VA. I couldn't boot Linux after a kernel update. Not even the safe
mode would start. Perhaps the problem lies in kernel and not in grub?
