[Bug 5608] Re: SWAT expects to authenticate as root

2010-09-19 Thread mkalkbrenner
Workaround from #8 solved the issue for me in ubuntu 10.10. But I don't
know if this causes any unwanted side effects.

BTW it seems really strange to me that this issue exists since more than
four years now! It's impossible to use SWAT out of the box on ubuntu
unless you searched the web.

[Bug 641657] Re: SSH connections freeze after a period of time

2010-09-19 Thread Jeff Lane
Hi Steve,

Actually, I'm seeing it on any remote SSH connection (either to a
Canonical DC or to my own shared server).

I'm in Taipei at the moment so I'll try again here just to see if
there's something wonky on my end (router, or switch maybe) causing the
SSH connection do hang...

As for the rest, I haven't done an strace on it, nor a -vv... but I'll
keep that in mind too. It doesn't respond, that I know of to the escape
char, but to be perfectly honest, I'm not sure I tried '~' anyway... I
keep trying telnet chars by habit... so another thing to thing to try.

I'm going to leave this as incomplete for the moment and I'll try to get
an strace from a failing condition and try some other stuff (like from
this different location) and see what happens.

[Bug 642866] Re: openssh client logs into server without specifying the correct key file.

2010-09-19 Thread C de-Avillez
I cannot repeat on Maverick; renaming the id_rsa and id_rsa.pub causes
SSH to drop to password validation.

@Canoblus: some things to try/verify:

1. what happens when you try to open the session as 'ssh -vvv
usern...@192.168.1.222'?
2. what happens when you try to open the session as 'ssh -vvv -i
linux_test_server usern...@192.168.1.222'?

[Bug 643100] [NEW] Recent update broke dhcp

2010-09-19 Thread Till Klampaeckel
Public bug reported:

With the last Ubuntu update dhcp(3)-client got uninstalled on my system.

So when the network-manager tried to connected I read the following in
/var/log/syslog:

Sep 19 18:34:51 till-laptop NetworkManager: WARN  dhclient_start():
/sbin/dhclient does not exist.

So I reinstalled dhcp3-client (using aptitude install dhcp3-client) and
now I read the following:

Sep 19 23:48:35 till-laptop dhclient: Usage: dhclient [-1dqrx] [-nw] [-p
port] [-s server]
Sep 19 23:48:35 till-laptop dhclient: [-cf config-file] [-lf
lease-file][-pf pid-file] [-e VAR=val]
Sep 19 23:48:35 till-laptop dhclient: [-sf script-file]
[interface]
Sep 19 23:50:58 till-laptop dhclient: Internet Systems Consortium DHCP Client
V3.1.3

The workaround is to open a terminal and type: sudo dhclient3 and
everything seems to work. The only downside is that the network manager
doesn't seem to recognize this. So it keeps spinning up there.

You're only affected if you try to use dhcp. If you hardcode network
settings in the connection profile (in network-manager), it works like
expected.

[Bug 642512] Re: Ubuntu Netbook does not load Live Desktop enviroment when attempting to test

2010-09-19 Thread Mario Limonciello
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 614088 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/614088

This behavior sounds like the bug where netbook edition doesn't fall
back to 2D mode or indicate an error when it can't activate 3D.

You can verify this by interrupting the automatic boot menu and choosing
the Try Ubuntu Netbook without making any changes to your computer
option in the menu. That will bypass the installer and go right to the
live session.

[Bug 642517] Re: kernel oops due to lirc using mythbuntu 10.10 beta

2010-09-19 Thread Mario Limonciello
Douglas:

Can you please file separate bugs for the misconfigured NVIDIA graphics
and ALSA HDMI? We'll keep this bug exclusively for the lirc problem.

Is this problem reproducible and happens every boot?

Can you please run apport-collect 642517 from that machine, and it
will automatically append all the necessary information about the exact
kernel version you have.

[Bug 642518] Re: package fglrx 2:8.723.1-0ubuntu4 failed to install/upgrade: fglrx kernel module failed to build

2010-09-19 Thread Evan Broder
This may be ever so slightly tricky. CVE-2010-3081 was a bug in
compat_alloc_user_space, which is the function that compilation is
erroring out on.

Previously, compat_alloc_user_space was implemented per-architecture,
but after the patch, the per-architecture function was renamed to
arch_compat_alloc_user_space, and a new function compat_alloc_user_space
wraps arch_compat_alloc_user_space.

Unfortunately, though, whoever wrote this patch decided that the new
compat_alloc_user_space would be exported as a GPL-only symbol, and
fglrx is obviously not a GPL module, which means it's not allowed to use
the new compat_alloc_user_space symbol.

[Bug 642562] [NEW] Xorg freeze during boot after update to linux-image-2.6.32-24-generic

2010-09-19 Thread Stefan Pielmeier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

After yesterdays update to linux-image-2.6.32-24-generic, my system crashes
(not only X) after showing the boot splash screen. SSH to the machine is not
possible anymore, Ctrl-Alt-F1 does not change to a console.
The only workaround is to choose recovery in the grub2 boot menu which sucks
because graphics still doesn't work like expected in normal graphics and low
resolultion graphic needs to be chosen.

Before the update yesterday, my system was up to date (daily upgrade).

I will fall back to the kernel before this one now to avoid trouble ...

[Bug 558926] Re: Open files on ejected media cause automount of new media to break

2010-09-19 Thread Phillip Susi
Hrm... actually it seems to behave a bit differently in maverick. It
used to do a lazy unmount of the fs, which removed it from the namespace
so no new processes could access the old mount. Now it appears it never
unmounts the old disc. I can hit the eject button while a terminal has
an open file on the disc and as far as anything can see, the old disc is
still there. I can open the drive in my computer in nautilus and still
see the files on the disc even though nothing is in the drive.
Inserting a new disc has no effect. Nautilus does inform me that the
terminal window has files open on the disc when I click the eject
button, but when I click unmount anyway, the window just pops right back
up again.

The known Workarounds I've found so far:
Workaround 1: Start easytag with LANG=C.
Workaround 2: Use only freedb.musicbrainz.org for CDDB servers.

[Bug 642557] [NEW] flgrx fails to install from Swat X PPA

2010-09-19 Thread Randy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

This started after the most recent kernel updates on Lucid. No ATI
drivers seem to be able to build and create the necessary kernel module
with dkms. Attempted 10.5, 10.6, 10.7, 10.8, and 10.9 manually. Issue
seems to possibly be related to a change that came out with the kernel
update. See error message below from the dkms make log for most recent
ATI driver.

[Bug 642577] [NEW] Menu text in OpenOffice are obscured in Maverick

2010-09-19 Thread Tony Mugan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

All column and row headings as well as the text of menu titles (but not
the items in the menu) are obscured by horizontal lines.

No errors are thrown if run from a terminal and the application still
runs fine other than that as far as I can see.

I agree with the previous comment - as it currently is, I often don't
get system information on my multi-core system, even though load is far
from high. It's just above 1.

[Bug 642518] Re: package fglrx 2:8.723.1-0ubuntu4 failed to install/upgrade: fglrx kernel module failed to build

compat_alloc_user_space and fglrx on the LKML: http://marc.info/?l

a particularly good fix other than getting help from ATI.

[Bug 625265] Re: rtl8187: spontaneously disassociates

2010-09-19 Thread Vince McIntyre
I omitted to remove the needs-upstream-testing tag, I'm not that
familiar with all the LP functions.

I noted in the bug I that tested with linux-image-2.6.35-020635rc1-generic.
That has the same problems.

I tested again, with
linux-image-2.6.32-0206322109-generic_2.6.32-0206322109.201008271507_i386.deb
from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.32.21.9-lucid/
$ uname -a
Linux ubuntu 2.6.32-0206322109-generic #201008271507 SMP Fri Aug 27 16:10:51
UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux

I tried this for a couple of days. The interface falls over after a few
minutes to a few hours.

Here's what dmesg says about the insertion (hot-plug) of the device
with that kernel:

[ 1212.644016] usb 1-2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4
[ 1212.783305] usb 1-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

[ 1219.124968] wlan1: associated
[ 1219.130471] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): wlan1: link becomes ready

And then I get only these items in dmesg:
[ 1986.324027] [drm] nouveau :01:00.0: Setting dpms mode 1 on vga encoder
(output 1)
[ 7582.500014] No probe response from AP 00:04:ed:b9:1c:d7 after 500ms,
disconnecting.

After bringing the interface up (again static IP config, WEP encryption)
iwconfig reports this
ubuntu$ sudo iwconfig wlan1
wlan1 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:My Net's home
  Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: 00:04:ED:B9:1C:D7

  Link Quality=64/70 Signal level=-46 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
  Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

While waiting for a response to the initial report I added a pci-based wireless
card to the system, which reports about -80 dBm vs -50 dBm from the netgear.
Not clear why the difference is so large, they are less than a metre apart,
(not too close, in case of interference).
The pci card antenna is connected fine, the system case is not metal (Dell).

I shut down this interface and started another test with just the netgear.
It failed in exactly the same way as before.

here's dmesg for when the interface comes up:
[90153.178570] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan1: link is not ready
[90155.261318] wlan1: direct probe to AP 00:04:ed:b9:1c:d7 (try 1)
[90155.263699] wlan1: direct probe responded

[90155.267184] wlan1: authenticated

[90155.269187] wlan1: RX AssocResp from 00:04:ed:b9:1c:d7 (capab=0x431 status=0
aid=4)
[90155.269191] wlan1: associated
[90155.274688] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): wlan1: link becomes ready

later I find the interface in this state:
wlan1 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:off/any
  Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=20 dBm
  Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
  Encryption key:F43E-D0B4-6B
  Power Management:off

and this in dmesg:
[90767.052019] [drm] nouveau :01:00.0: Setting dpms mode 1 on vga encoder
(output 1)
[91104.500017] No probe response from AP 00:04:ed:b9:1c:d7 after 500ms,
disconnecting.

Reporting on this is being complicated by something strange happening
with logging using this kernel.
dmesg is updating, but I am not getting kernel messages in the other logs.
Every time I restart rsyslogd I get in /var/log/kern.log:
Sep 17 21:17:11 ubuntu kernel: imklog: Cannot read proc file system, 1.

I see syslog messages for cron jobs etc but not kernel-related things.
Not sure if there is anything I can do about this, please advise.

[Bug 642567] Re: cant see the Download size of the all packages at once

2010-09-19 Thread Vish
Abhijit just wants to know the download size it will take to re-
install all the installed packages.

AbhiJit vish, because i need to reinstall ubuntu. and i have
generated automatic installl script. but problem is my net speed. so
when i wll be inside my new clean install i want to see total of how
much time it is going to take so that i can leave lappy for that much
time and go to other work

If the properties for all the packages selected was displayed , it would
probably solve this bug.
The problem here is, Synaptic is able to display the download size for each
package , but when we select two or more packages only the properties for the
last package is displayed. This might be a separate bug? But, fixing this
select could address this issue.

[Bug 638524] Re: The size of a named pipe created by mknod or mkfifo always zero.

2010-09-19 Thread Mechanical snail
I think the size of a FIFO is supposed to always be zero
(http://lkml.indiana.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0809.1/0996.html says
st_size has no meaning except for regular files and symlinks. in
response to a similar question), though a quick web search turned up no
formal documentation. Therefore, I am marking this invalid. If I'm
wrong, please set status back to New.

[Bug 570787] Re: brasero calls kpackagekit for finding toc2cue

2010-09-19 Thread Peter Eijlander
Intstalled cue2toc and cdrdao via synaptic, so cdrdao is installed now, still
Brasero says that cdrdao is not installed when I want to create an image or
copy of an audio cd.
I am using 64bit Lucid on AMD64.
Last Tuesday I ran into the same problem installing 32bit Lucid on a Dell 4500
P4 PC, just to make a copy of that very Live CD I used to install and got the
error also: Missing toc2cue and cdrdao...

[Bug 642518] Re: package fglrx 2:8.723.1-0ubuntu4 failed to install/upgrade: fglrx kernel module failed to build

2010-09-19 Thread Evan Broder
Well, here's one option. Since CVE-2010-3081 was about not checking
access_ok() on the return value from (arch_)compat_alloc_user_space, we
can add that check to KCL_IOCTL_AllocUserSpace32, use
arch_compat_alloc_user_space, and side-step the GPL-only-ness of
compat_alloc_user_space. It's not pretty, and could be dangerous if
there are future security-related changes to the new
compat_alloc_user_space.

This patch re-writes KCL_IOCTL_AllocUserSpace32 to use
arch_compat_alloc_user_space and check access_ok(). Currently it will
only compile on kernels with the CVE-2010-3081 patch; it would need to
be tweaked to use compat_alloc_user_space if
arch_compat_alloc_user_space isn't defined.
