[Bug 1723025] Re: no login screen when booting with an external monitor attached

2017-10-28 Thread Igor Starikov
Confirm that after 17.04 -> 17.10 upgrade.

Playing with primary display setting works neither in built-in display
ocnfigurator nor in nvidia-settings.

[Bug 735496] it's cool in fact

Hi!

that we thought I need to share this with you) here, take a peek

Sent: Saturday, October 28, 2017 11:10 PM
To: robertc1...@yahoo.com
Subject: Must.have.this.

It happens in our company. People even write their passwords down and
stick them to their laptops. HR and management pretend to care but
not enough to do anything about it. It should at least be a
disciplinary offence. I even have to have weekly talks to others in
the IT dept who request users passwords so they can setup their
reimaged laptop, despite our Deployment system automates it all and
them being Domain  Admins.

I turn a little greyer every day.

[Bug 1728342] [NEW] Some applications disable "Night Light" and it is not reenabled upon exiting application

2017-10-28 Thread Steve Barcomb
Public bug reported:

Some applications disable "Night Light" and it is not reenabled upon
exiting application.

Examples:
Minecraft
Nvidia Settings
World of Warcraft via Wine.

You can go into settings and manually toggle "Night Light" off and back
on in order to get the blue light reduction to take effect again.

Not all application/games will cause this. Rocket League, Civilization
5 are examples that do not.

2017-10-28 Thread Thijs

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. We noticed that you were installing the LTS version of
Ubuntu using an older version of the installation media. The latest
point release of 14.04 is 14.04.5. Please try installing from that
version of the installation media and see if that resolves your issue.
Thanks in advance!

[Bug 1724911] Re: text VTs are unavailable on desktop after upgrade to Ubuntu 17.10

2017-10-28 Thread Steve Langasek
3840ed9548f778717aaab5eab744da798c3ea055 (rebased), whose content is
equivalent to e63a94f12b5fc67b2b92a89d4058e7a9021e900e, also now fails.

So whatever is different here between the working and failing builds has
to do with more than just the git content.

Joe, can you give me a step-by-step guide for how you prepare each build
from git during the bisect? I've definitely missed something in my
builds, because I've just looked at my initrd for the latest build and
find that it's missing the i915.ko module... and that this module isn't
even included in the linux-image-4.13.0-041300-generic package. So all
of the test results from kernels I built are certainly suspect.

[Bug 1728337] [NEW] watchdog: BUG: soft lockup & general instability

2017-10-28 Thread Patrick Jeeves
Public bug reported:

I've included the only time that the logs produced any output around the
time of the crashes; which was a soft lockup error.

Regardless, i've had a lot of instability ever since installing artful;
to me that suggests a kernel issue. Although lots of applications crash
for no discernible reason with nothing in the logs to suggest why, and
no pattern at all. Doing a clean install didn't help matters, although
it was necessary, my system was bricked by one of the crashes.

Ubuntu bug doesn't work correctly, at all. I selected "other problem"
and it brought up display issues; then brought of a dialog titled "text"
with the message "text" and asked me yes or no, i selected no, and that
didn't seem to matter. I selected that i didn't know if i could provide
more information, and in the report it listed that as willing to do
something with git, etc. It would be much easier to report bugs, if the
bug reporter worked correctly, for instance.

[Bug 1719134] Re: Shouldn't create /usr/local/bin/firefox and thunderbird

2017-10-28 Thread kolya
I would like to expand on one of the comment mentioned by this bug's
author:

"there's no "exec" and bash isn't clever enough to optimize it, leaving
an extra "bash /usr/local/bin/firefox" running for the entire firefox
session."

Not only it leaves extra bash running it also breaks any scripts that
start and kill firefox - because now they issue signal to bash, bash
dies, firefox continues to run.

[Bug 1641671] Re: "ttf-mscorefonts-installer: processing..." email message repeatedly from /etc/cron.daily/update-notifier-common

2017-10-28 Thread Roman Odaisky
That is not the core issue either. I, for example, have declined to
accept the license on purpose (I dislike the fonts and I prefer them not
to be installed even if some package suggests this one as a dependency),
yet I get the message.

As I said above, both print() statements in the /usr/lib/update-notifier
/package-data-downloader script make no sense unless the script is run
interactively.

Attaching a patch.

[Bug 488318] Re: Excessive Log Files

2017-10-28 Thread sordna
There is a simple configuration bug, seeing it in 16.04 and 17.10 so it's
everywhere.
The fix is VERY SIMPLE TOO.

The logrotate config script wants to rotate logfile:
/var/log/mediatomb.log

But mediatomb is run with -l /var/log/mediatomb

The package maintainer should make them consistent. I downloaded the
source and see this:

mediatomb-0.12.1-47-g7ab7616$ grep -r log/mediatomb .
./config/mediatomb-conf-fedora:MT_LOGFILE="/var/log/mediatomb"
./config/mediatomb-conf-optware:MT_LOGFILE="/opt/var/log/mediatomb"
./debian/mediatomb-daemon.mediatomb.default:MT_LOGFILE="/var/log/mediatomb"
./debian/mediatomb-daemon.mediatomb.upstart:env LOGFILE=/var/log/mediatomb.log
./debian/mediatomb-daemon.mediatomb.logrotate:"/var/log/mediatomb.log" {
./debian/mediatomb-daemon.postrm:rm -rf /var/log/mediatomb
/var/log/mediatomb* \
./mediatomb.spec.in:/var/log/mediatomb {

Either mediatomb-daemon.mediatomb.default or mediatomb-
daemon.mediatomb.logrotate should be updated so they both call the
logfile with the same filename! Take your pick how the logfile should
be named but make it consistent across the startup and logrotate
configuration files :-)

Please fix asap now that the fix is finally identified, the bug has been
open for too many years.

Sorry, there were many different solutions posted so I wasn’t sure which

So just to be clear, is the solution:

$ sudo apt purge gdm3

??

What’s the exact list of steps to resolve this?

[Bug 191654] Re: Activate font auto hinting by default

2017-10-28 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Quoting from the Arch Linux wiki:

"The autohinter attempts to do automatic hinting and disregards any
existing hinting information. Originally it was the default because
TrueType2 fonts were patent-protected but now that these patents have
expired there is very little reason to use it. It does work better with
fonts that have broken or no hinting information but it will be strongly
sub-optimal for fonts with good hinting information. Generally common
fonts are of the later kind so autohinter will not be useful. Autohinter
is disabled by default."

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/font_configuration#Autohinter

If you disagree (ideally with evidence to support your position), please
contact the Ubuntu Desktop Team to discuss.

For now, I'm closing this bug.

Installed "snapd-login-service" and it is now working. That seems to be
all that I needed to do for my issue.

[Bug 1727057] Re: Drag and Drop Malfunction

2017-10-28 Thread oiugews
Would you please confirm if this is the same bug I am seeing?

Getting two different bugs on Ubuntu 17.10 with dragging and dropping
files, and they're both between nautilus and nautilus-desktop program
interactions.

1. When dragging a file from the desktop (nautilus-desktop) over onto a
nautilus window, nautilus-desktop becomes unresponsive and must be
restarted (or logging out and back in). Dragging and dropping files
around within the desktop works fine, and within nautilus windows works
fine as well.

2. When dragging a file from a nautilus window onto the desktop, it
doesn't freeze either of them up, but it does make a copy of the file
instead of moving the file, even though both files are on the same
filesystem. When dragging and dropping files within a nautilus window,
or within the desktop, files are moved as expected and not copied.

[Bug 1728321] Re: Extremely Long Delay after clicking "Login" on SSDM until login commences

2017-10-28 Thread Gerald E Butler
** Description changed:

  I installed the full "kubuntu-desktop" meta-package. Using "Pop_OS!"
  spin of Ubuntu 17.10. SDDM is the XDM that is being used. When I enter
  my password and click, "Login", the cursor changes to an "X" and you
  can't click on anything else or change anything in SDDM screen. It just
  sits there for 30 to 60 seconds without any sort of feedback or anything
  seeming to happen. Then, it rapidly displays the desktop. It seems like
  perhaps it is supposed to be showing a "Splash/Loading" screen during
  that time, but, I'm not sure if that is what it is supposed to do or
  not.
+
+ CORRECTION #1: I misspoke above. It does display a splash screen after
+ the 30 to 60 second wait on the SDDM login screen. The splash shows and
+ animation for about 5 to 10 seconds before the desktop appears. The 30
+ to 60 delay is after I click "Login" on the SDDM screen *before* the
+ splash screen appears. While it is waiting on the SDDM screen after
+ clicking login, the cursor changes to an "X" and you can't click on
+ anything or change anything. The cursor can be moved though.

2017-10-28 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Reviewing your dmesg attachment in this bug report it
seems that there is a problem with your hardware. I recommend
performing a back up and then investigating the situation. Measures you
might take include checking cable connections and using software tools
to investigate the health of your hardware. In the event that is is not
in fact an error with your hardware please set the bug's status back to
New.  Thanks and good luck!

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1728321] [NEW] Extremely Long Delay after clicking "Login" on SSDM until login commences

2017-10-28 Thread Gerald E Butler
Public bug reported:

I installed the full "kubuntu-desktop" meta-package. Using "Pop_OS!"
spin of Ubuntu 17.10. SDDM is the XDM that is being used. When I enter
my password and click, "Login", the cursor changes to an "X" and you
can't click on anything else or change anything in SDDM screen. It just
sits there for 30 to 60 seconds without any sort of feedback or anything
seeming to happen. Then, it rapidly displays the desktop. It seems like
perhaps it is supposed to be showing a "Splash/Loading" screen during
that time, but, I'm not sure if that is what it is supposed to do or
not.

[Bug 1728038] Re: Remove ancient mozjs from bionic

2017-10-28 Thread Jeremy Bicha
** Description changed:

  mozjs
  =

  The mozjs source package is the SpiderMonkey JavaScript engine from
  Firefox 4 (?)

  https://developer.mozilla.org/en-
  US/docs/Mozilla/Projects/SpiderMonkey/Releases/1.8.5

  That makes it very out of date. It has been replaced by mozj52
  (corresponds with Firefox 52 ESR) which is still supported by Mozilla.

  It has 3 reverse dependencies in Ubuntu, none of which are very important any
more so let's remove them too:
  couchdb
  gxine
  oolite

  $ reverse-depends src:oolite
  Reverse-Recommends
  --
  * games-finest  (for oolite)
  * games-finest-light(for oolite)
  * games-simulation  (for oolite)
  * games-strategy(for oolite)
  * gnustep-games (for oolite)

  mozjs24
  ===
  mozjs24 corresponds with Firefox 24 and is also unsupported.

  It has no reverse dependencies in Ubuntu.
+
+ Remaining versions of mozjs in Ubuntu bionic
+
+ * mozjs52 – supported until June 2018, used by GNOME 3.26 and 3.28
+ * mozjs38 – used by cjs and an optional package from libproxy, see LP:

[Bug 1724657] Re: Boot freeze with Ubuntu 17.10 Live ISO on Surface Book

2017-10-28 Thread Chatty
I finally solved it by inserting intel-ucode.img (taken from
archlinux-2017.10.01-x86_64.iso) as the first initrd in grub.cfg. This
updates the microcode very early in the boot process. I tried this with
the kernel delivered with Ubuntu 17.10 (4.13.0-generic). So updating
linux-firmware is the resolution. This also solves this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/intel-microcode/+bug/1724650

But I found that WiFi is unstable after like 10 mins it gets
disconnected and does not see any network anymore. Time for another bug.
And when I used a new kernel image (4.14-rc6) and insterted belonging
modules into initrd then "(initramfs) unable to find a medium containing
a live file system." Oh well.

2017-10-28 Thread Chatty
I solved this bug (and also
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1724657) by
inserting intel-ucode.img (taken from recent arch linux iso) as first
initrd into grub.cfg. This updates the microcode very early in the boot
process. And this way I can use the live iso without having to install
to hard drive and install additional packages and so on.

[Bug 1707352] Re: the change from libsane to libsane1 broke many (all?) 3rd party plug-ins for sane

2017-10-28 Thread Warren
I have created a generalized bash script that rebuilds .deb packages,
changing the dependency from libsane (whatever version) to libsane1 (>=
1.0.27). Here for your enjoyment is "fixlibsane1.sh":

[code]
#!/bin/bash

# A simple script to make packages that are uninstallable due to change from
# libsane to libsane1 installable, by changing the dependency in the .deb
package.
# First parameter is path to .deb file to modify, like so:
#   ./fixlibsane1.sh iscan_2.30.3-1_amd64.deb
# The "Depends: field will have libsane (version)" changed to "libsane1 (>=
1.0.27)"
# A new deb package will be created alongside the original, ending in "-mod.deb"
# --Warren Severin

indebfull=$1
indebbase=$(basename "$indebfull")
indebdir=$(dirname "$indebfull")
indebext="${indebbase##*.}"
indebroot="${indebbase%.*}"
tmpdir=$(mktemp -d)

if [ ! "$indebext" = "deb" ]; then
  echo "Did you enter the path to the .deb file as the first parameter?
Exiting."; exit 1; fi
if [ ! -e "$indebfull" ]; then
  echo "Not finding $indebfull. Exiting."; exit 1; fi
if [ -z $(which perl) ]; then
  echo "This script requires perl. Do you need to install it? Exiting."; exit
1; fi

dpkg-deb -x "$indebfull" "$tmpdir"
dpkg-deb --control "$indebfull" "$tmpdir/DEBIAN"
perl -i -pe 's/^(Depends:.*?)libsane( +\(.*?\))?/\1libsane1 (>= 1.0.27)/'
"$tmpdir/DEBIAN/control"
dpkg -b "$tmpdir" "${indebdir}/${indebroot}-mod.deb"

rmdir --ignore-fail-on-non-empty "$tmpdir"

[Bug 1728313] Re: integrated intel GPU doesn't work with wayland on ubuntu 17.10

2017-10-28 Thread giannione
** Description changed:

  I've got a CPU with integrated GPU, it's the intel i5-8400; I've also
  installed an old asus [Radeon HD 6670/7670] GPU. OS: ubuntu 17.10

  The first problem is that the integrated GPU doesn't work unless you edit
grub enabling the i915 driver support.
  I had to modify GRUB to load the intel driver:
  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash i915.alpha_support=1"

  This GPU works perfectly with wayland (gnome and ubuntu session):
  Turks XT [Radeon HD 6670/7670]

  But when I enable the integrated GPU (by disabling the Radeon pci GPU from
the bios), I can't use wayland, which disappears from the login screen.
  My question is why the integrated intel GPU doesn't work with wayland: I can
only use X.

+ If I switch from gdm3 to lightdm, I can see the wayland gnome and ubuntu
+ sessions in the list of the available sessions, but I can't login. To be
+ precise, using lightdm I can't login at all.
+
  When logging, there are some errors, for example:
  [OK] Starting session manager for UID 121
- Stopping session manager for UID 121
-
-
-
+ Stopping session manager for UID 121

[Bug 518056] Re: cedilla appears as accented c (ć instead of ç) when typing 'c

2017-10-28 Thread Felipe Figueiredo
Please see bug #228077 for information on the report upstream rejected
for gnome-control-center.

Leandro, I don't have a US keyboard anymore (nor did a read all the
comments here), but if this is still an issue, I don't think a fix will
appear anytime soon.

Good luck on this.
