Not the original reporter, but I can confirm that this still affects me
on latest gutsy (upgraded from feisty, no fresh install).
As a temporary workaround, I found that I can manually lock the screen
and still hibernate through the Stand-by key on my keyboard.

I was going to report a similar bug, but I found that the latest kernel
update (2.6.20-15) fixed the problem on my Sony Vaio GRT916Z (the
internal memory stick reader is Sony model MSC-U04). Could you please
verify if it's working for you too?
