I was using that, but the category list the way gnome 3 has it is a
better solution when you have to search for an app (don't remember what
category it's under). Also the app lens moves around depending on how
many windows you have open.

The mouse button you suggest isn't that different from the menu that
exists now, a checkbox (maybe in the dash itself) that makes the
categories visible permanently would be much better.

Suggestion for
Empathy behaves ok on middle click - if the buddy list is not focused or
even closed (in the indicator) it just comes up. I don't see why it
would be a problem with right click - Empathy. As for intuitiveness,
middle click can't score too high on that.

After I logged in it was working for my first window (gnome-terminal)
then I open firefox and it got bugged. Then I relog and it's working
fine after I opened a terminal again and then opened and closed firefox
a few times. Seems kind of random.
