UP), so this morning I just turned it off and rebooted. Then I ran the
three apt commands, update, upgrade, and autoremove. That PC now runs
xubuntu 20.04 just fine.

Two questions. What do you mean by "the ubuntu-desktop package"? Do you
mean the iso I downloaded for Ubuntu 18.04? And, if so, in what format?
Iso?
Second, where might I get directions on just how to install the package
from the command line. By command line I take it you mean a
Brian, by ubuntu-desktop package, do you mean
ubuntu-release-upgrader-core ?
And, if so, where to I find that?

Have just recently installed Ubuntu MATE 14.04.2 LTS on a venerable HP
notebook. The install was done as Ubuntu 16.04 had failed miserably.
Today I got the notice regarding the need to install the new 16.04
hardware updater. N.B., yesterday that update went without a problem on
my older DELL PC
